Abstract

717,416. Lubricating ships' hulls. LEGG, H. N. Oct. 6, 1952 [July 5, 1951], No. 16013/51. Class 113 (1) [Also in Group XXI] In a streamline watercraft such as a submarine or torpedo from which a water jet is directed rearwardly at high velocity over the external surface of the craft to reduce skin friction, viscous liquid is exuded from the surface of the craft where it is swept by the jet. A centrifugal pump 18 draws water from the nose 11 of the craft and delivers it through ducts 20 to form an annular jet at the transition point 12 in the hull's curvature where the hull is stepped for this purpose. Behind the point 12, a porous jacket 10 of sintered metal &c. encloses the hull proper and oil is forced into the space between them whence it exudes outwards through the porous jacket. To direct the water flow inwards as it reaches the after part of the hull, the porous jacket may be interrupted and the rear part be associated with a pump adapted to draw water inwards through the jacket whence it is delivered by the pump either to the main jet or to auxiliary jets rearwardly directed from the stern of the craft.
