The effective length of a ship, and hence the critical velocity, is increased by one or more members 11 connected to it to trail behind it and so shaped as to form a continuation of its sides at the water level. The trailer members are formed in telescopic sections, are faired into the sides of the hull at 13, and carry horizontal and vertical rudders 15, 16. The hull may have two trailer members connected by a structure 14 as in Fig. 2, or the two members may be independent of one another, or if the ship has a sharp stern, one trailer member only is fitted and faired into the stern.
