Abstract

555,525. Submarine vessels. LAKEY, E. O. April 28, 1942, No. 4146. [Class 113 (ii)] Submersible cargo-containers b, which are stated to be applicable for carrying armoured vehicles and other equipment to be landed on beaches during invasion operations, are propelled by means of a towing vessel such as a submarine a, or a surface vessel, to which the container a is connected by a flexible connection such as a ball-and-socket joint formed by a ball e on the container and a number of jaw-like races f, Fig. 1, (not shown), actuated by toggles and screws from the inside of the submarine. A number of containers may be joined together and the rear container is stream-lined at its end. Stabilizing chambers h are fitted at the ends of the containers, and are provided with water the level of which is adjustable from the towing vessel, a layer of oil h<SP>1</SP> serving to prevent loss of air by solution in water. Hydroplanes c on the containers are pneumatically operated. The submarine a may be fitted with an air-inlet pipe <SP>2</SP> operable like a submarine periscope, and the container may be fitted with an auxiliary motor to assist beaching, and may be constructed so as to house personnel.
