Abstract

974,655. Boats. M. KURIHARA. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959; Sept. 8, 1960], No. 41127/60. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. A high-speed water vessel of hard chine section has one or more rearwardly facing ejection slits 10 formed on each side of the keel line in a step in the underwater bow section of the hull at a distance of from 15% to 35% of the load water line length of the hull from the bow, and means for passing fluid under pressure, e.g. sea water and/or air, to a compartment 11 which is open to the exterior of the hull at the slits 10 so that the fluid is ejected rearwardly of the slits to reduce the wave making resistance of the hull to motion, and guide vanes 9 are arranged in the compartment to distribute the fluid over the area of the slits 10 and to direct it towards the stern. A conduit 7 connects the compartment 11 with an air compressor (not shown) to supply the fluid which in Figs. 5 to 7 is air. In a further embodiment water is taken in through openings in the bottom of the hull and pumped to the compartment. Air is also supplied through a manifold having branch outlets, shrouded by U-shaped members, to mix with the water. The propellers of the vessel are set at a depth to encounter water free from entrained air. The fluid ejection slits may also be placed at the stern. The invention also effectively controls pitching of the vessel and assists propulsion.
