Abstract

1,063,945. Liquid jet propulsion, air cushion vehicles. S. BARLETTA. Feb. 22, 1965 [July 23, 1964; Nov. 6, 1964; Nov. 21, 1964], No. 7513/65. Headings B7K and B7V. In a liquid jet propulsion unit the plane of the water intake mouth is flush with the keel and the duct for delivery of water to a pump impeller is inclined at an angle a to the intake plane, where tan a = v/w 1 , v being the vertical component of the velocity at which the water is drawn into the intake and w 1 the design speed of the boat. When applied to hydrofoil craft or air-cushion vehicles the intake mouth is extended below the bottom of the vessel. In a further embodiment, an inverted channel fitted with an impeller may be utilized instead of the closed inlet duct, the channel extending through the keel and hull of the boat.
