Abstract

1422537 Marine propulsion and steering OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 13 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 17872/73 Heading B7V A marine steering system comprises a propulsion unit, e.g. outboard motor 23, which is adapted to be attached to the hull 18 so as to be pivotable in a vertical plane about a hollow tilt pin 21 and also pivotable for steering about a vertical pivot 27. A rotary member, e.g. threaded rod 69, extends inside the hollow tilt pin 21 and co-operates with a threaded tube 71 and linkage 151, 157 so that rotation of the rod 69 causes steering movement of the motor 23. This rotation is effected by the inner rotary element 47 of a flexible cable 41 which is driven by the output member 191 of a steering unit 31 which comprises a steering wheel 39 mounted on a housing 33. As shown in Fig. 1, the steering wheel 39 drives a shaft 37 upon which is fixed a pinion carrier 173 which carries three compound gears 179 each comprising a small pinion 181 and a larger gear portion 187. The pinions 181 mesh with the internal gear 183 formed in the housing 33 while the gear portions 187 mesh with output pinion 189 on the output shaft 191. Shaft 191 therefore rotates much faster than the steering wheel when in use. The steering wheel may be limited to a given number of turns by a stack of washers 267 having interengaging upstanding projections.
