Abstract
205,090. Constantin, L., and Daloz, G. Oct. 9, 1922, [Convention date]. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- Relates to propelling mechanism for ships and other vehicles comprising wind motors and mechanical transmission gear and consists in providing the mechanism with a brake, in means for positioning the wind motor either by hand or automatically by wind vanes or auxiliary motors, and in forming the blades of the motor of variable area and diameter. A wind motor 2, Fig. 1, drives a boat propeller 4 through a transmission shaft 3 and gearing. The propeller shaft is fitted with a brake 14 controlled by the lever 15. The blades of the motor 2 have a detachable outer portion consisting of a tube 6, cross ribs 9, edges units 11, 12, 13 and suitable outer covering. This tube 6 telescopes into a similar main tube 5 carrying the inner part of the blade, the two tubes being held together by a bolt 7. For positioning the motor relative to the wind, the supporting post is rotatably mounted and adapted to be rotated by worm and worm gear 16. The gearing may be disconnected from the hand control. For large installations the supporting post is rotated by wind power. Two symmetrical vanes mounted on a trapezoidal frame 28, 29, 30, Fig. 3, are connected by cables 31, 32 with clutches 23, 24 whereby on the wind shifting the frame moves and one of the clutches is engaged so that the corresponding clutch shaft takes power from the pinion 20 on the shaft 18 of the wind motor and through the pinion 25 or 26 conveys it to the pinion 27 on the supporting column to rotate it. The gear is put out of action by disconnecting the clutches. In a modification, a separate auxiliary wind motor is connected to the adjusting frame. The framework supporting the main wind motor carries plane or aerofoil surfaces suitably disposed so as to balance the reaction due to the turning couple. Alternatively the top of the supporting column carrying the wind motor is inclined to the main vertical part whereby the motor is offset from the vertical axis. Specification 182,764, [Class 20 (ii), Buildings and structures, Miscellaneous accessories &c.], is referred to.
