Abstract

Boats and ships.-Toy boats or ships are propelled by means of wind-actuated motors having cupshaped wind vanes and coupled to the propeller shaft, paddle-wheels, &c., by means of one or more free wheels to permit rotation in one direction only. The propeller shaft g, Fig. 1, is driven by bevel-gearing f, i from a vertical shaft a which passes up through the funnel c and carries, at the top, radial arms d with wind vanes or cups e, and the wheel i is free to rotate independently of the shaft g in one direction. In an arrangement applied to a toy sailing-boat, the upright m, Fig. 3, is hinged to the deck at r so that it can be turned out of the way when the sail is in use, a coupling s being provided on the shaft n. For large boats there may be more than one wind motor driving one or more propellers. Change-speed gearing may be provided.
