This invention relates to power plants,
and it is an object of the invention to pro-' vide a device of this general character embodying novel and improved means wherein a wind driven element is operatively en gaged with an electrical generator and wherein the electricity generated thereby. is conveyed to an accumulator or storage bat: ter
Xnother object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with a boat and wherein such mechanism is provided with means for generating and storing a supply of electrical energy and which energy may be employed as desired.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved power plant whereby certain im-' portant advantages are attained and the device rendered SIIIIPlGI, less expensive and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more full set forth.

In order that my invention maybe the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accomment.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes the hull of a boat in which is suitably mounted an electrical genera- S pecification of Letters Patent.

tor G of any ordinary or preferred type. The generator G is in electrical connection with the storagebatteries S of any desired type.
Extending upwardly from the deck of the boat at longitudinally spaced points thereon are the masts 1 which rotatably support at a desired point above the deck of the boat a horizontally disposed shaft 2. The opposite end portions of the shaft 2 have fixed thereon the propellers P of a conventional construction.
Loosely mounted on the shaft 2 between the propellers P is an elongated sleeye 3. Fixed to one end portion of the sleeve 3 is a pulley 4 around which passes a belt 5, said belt 5 being in driving connection with the generator G.
The pulley 4 is provided with an outer clutch face 6 with which coacts a clutch member 7 keyed to the shaft 2 but having movement lengthwise thereof so that said clutch member 7 may be engaged or disengaged at will with the pulley 4. The sleeve 3 is held against endwise movement lengthwise ofvthe shaft 2 by the collars 8 locked to the shaft 2 and coacting with the opposite ends of the sleeve 3.
Surrounding the sleeve 3 and keyed thereto for rotation therewith but capable of movement lengthwise thereof is an elongated hub or sleeve 9 provided at its opposite end portions with the reversely related beveled pinions 10 adapted to separately mesh with a beveled gear 11. The gear 11 is fixed to the upper end portion of a vertically disposed shaft 12 rotatably supported at its lower end portion, at 14, by the boat and at its upper end portion bya bearing 15 carried by the frame F. The frame F is suitably mounted upon the boat.
Suitably fixed to the shaft 12 is a winddriven rotatable element W comprising a central cylindrical body 16 having extending outwardly from the periphery thereof the vertically disposed vanes 17 each of said vanes 17 being arranged horizontally on a desired incline with respect to the radius of the body 16. The outer vertical edges of the vanes 17 are tied or connected by the an nular members 18 positioned adjacent the tops and bottoms of saidv vanes 17 and whereby the vanes are effectively maintained in a fixed position.
Operatively engaged with one end ortion 0f th slee e 9 is a lever 19 adapted to be operated in any desired manner but herein disclosed as being capable of movement upon a point adjacent the stern of the boat through the instrumentality of properly associated rods and levers. The lever 19 is supported for swinging movement by the upper portion of the frame F.
Upon requisite swinging movement of the lever 19, the sleeve 9 may be adjusted to cause either of the pinions 10 to mesh with the gear 11 or said pinions 10 may both be brought into a neutral position or free of the gear 11. It will be obvious that when one of the pinions 10 is in mesh with the gear 11, the shaft 3 will be rotated in a direction reverse to the direction of rotation when the second pinion 10 is in mesh with the gear 11.
The frame F is provided with an extension 20 which supports a swinging lever 21 operatively engaged with the clutch member 7 so that said member 7 may be moved into or out of locking engagement with the clutch face 6 of the pulley 4 when required. As disclosed in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, the lever 21 may be readily operated from a point at the stern of the'boat by a plurality of associated rods and levers.
As the element W rotates under force of the wind, the generator G will be driven and the electrical energy created thereby will be conveyed to and stored in the batteries S and this generating of the electrical energy is preferably accomplished when the boat is moored or at anchor. When the element W is rotating to generate electrical energy, the clutch member 7 is preferably in release position.
The electrical energy stored in the batteries S may be used for any purpose desired but it will be obvious that, if desired, this current may be employed to operate the generator G as a motor whereu on the sleeve 3 will be rotated, together wit the shaft 1, when the clutch member 7 is in locked engagement with the clutch face 6 of the pulley 4. By this means, the stored energy may be used as a source of power for propel ing the boat through the instrumentality of the propellers P.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a power plant constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with a movable body including a deck, an upstanding frame carried by the deck, the deck and frame having vertically opposed bearings, a wind driven element rotatably supported by said bearings, a shaft supported by the deck above the frame, a sleeve mounted upon the shaft for driven connection with the wind driven element, coacting means carried by the shaft and the sleeve for causing the shaft and sleeve to rotate in unison, said means including a member keyed to the shaft for rotation therewith and for movement lengthwise thereof, and means carried by the frame for imparting movement to the member lengthwise of the shaft.
2. The combination with a movable body including a deck, an upstanding frame car ried by the deck, the deck and frame having vertically opposed bearings, a wind driven element rotatably supported by said bearings, a shaft supported by the deck above the frame, a sleeve mounted upon the shaft for driven connection with the wind driven element, coacting means carried by the shaft and the sleeve for causing the shaft and sleeve to rotate in unison, said means including a member keyed to the shaft for rotation therewith and for movement lengthwise thereof, means carried bythe frame for imparting movement to the member lengthwise of the shaft, and means operatin independently of the last named means or imparting movement to the sleeve lengthwise of the shaft to disconnect the sleeve and the wind driven element.
