558,204. Propelling ships ; feathering paddle-wheels ; paddle-boxes. WILKINS, E. C. F. June 29, 1942, No. 8939. [Classes 4, 113 (ii) and 114] [Also in Group XXVI] In a ship propelled by feathering paddlewheels DPW, free paddle-wheels FPW also of the feathering type are arranged so as to be driven by the race created by the driving paddles and to drive powergenerating means such as an electric generator or an auxiliary propeller. The driving and driven wheels are arranged in a common paddle box which is shaped as shown to direct water on to the driving paddles and to direct the race therefrom on to the driven paddles. Chambers may be provided inboard the ship into which the paddlewheels may be withdrawn for inspection and repair.
