Abstract

The drive system employs one or more propulsion units each consisting of a hollow ring (4) inside which is mounted a propeller (11, 12) with the tips of the blades integral with a solid ring housed inside the hollow ring by means of which the drive is transmitted. The solid ring is a toothed ring, driven by a set of four equally spaced drive pinions, each pinion powered by a motor housed inside a pod (2) projecting from the hollow ring. Each drive pinion is mounted on the output spindle of a motor, which is a hydraulic motor. The whole propulsion unit can be mounted to pivot about a vertical axis, under the hull of the vessel. A pump may have an impeller driven in the same way.
