Abstract

HODGSON 25 Feb 1972 8733/72 Heading FIT The invention relates to an air turbine driven propulsion unit for marine vessels and comprises an outer casing open at both ends and within which a rotor member is rotatably mounted in bearings. The rotor has blades mounted at its periphery and air nozzles are provided whereby air under pressure may be directed on to the blades to drive the rotor, some of the blades being arranged to rotate the rotor in one direction and the other blades to rotate the rotor in the opposite direction. Impeller blades are mounted internally within the rotor which is hollow and open at both ends whereby water is drawn in through one end of the casing and discharged through the other end thereby to propel the vessel either ahead or astern. Coils are provided adjacent the air turbine blades and hot air may be supplied to the coils to prevent freezing also to improve the turbine efficiency.
