Abstract

1,211,937. Wind motor propulsion. A. P. PEDRICK. 15 Jan., 1970, No. 11808/68. Heading B7V. A ship driven solely by natural winds is provided with a rotatable wind-driven member (as shown a Pelton wheel type device) which is connected by a mechanical linkage to a water impeller (e.g. water-screw or paddle wheels): and also by an electrical linkage to the same or a further water impeller, the electrical linkage comprising an electrical generator driven by the wind-driven member, a storage battery charged by the generator and an electric motor supplied by the battery and driving the water screw or paddle wheels. As shown water screw 27 is driven from motor 20 by the mechanical linkage comprising rod 25 transmission box 26 and the spindle of an electric motor 28, The alternative electrical drive is obtained from the box 28 driving a. generator 29 to charges a battery 30 which supplies the motor. A number of embodiments are described which disclose inter alia (a) vertical and horizontal Pelton wheel arrangements, rotatable about a vertical axis, (b) air screw arrangements (c) paddle wheels or water screw drive, (d) trimaran hull structure, (e) auxiliary sails.
