Abstract

A vessel has an 'S' shaped (in plan) sail 6 which is caused to rotate by the wind. The movement of the sail is transmitted through a mechanical linkage 9 to a propeller 11. <IMAGE>

Description

ROTATING-SAIL/PROPELLOR DRIVEN BOAT.
This invention relates to a rotating-sail/propellor driven boat.
Bailing craft propelled by the force of the wind against a sail of canvass or other similar material are well known.
These craft however, to some degree depend on the direction of the wind from which it strikes the sail.
People who use these craft usually need a minimum of tuition to succesfully operate them.
In this invention a sailing craft hull has an 'S' shaped (aerial view) rigid rotating sail erected on top which, when acted upon by wind from any direction will turn in only one predetermined direction.
This movement transmitts power to a mechanical link- age at the bottom of the sail shaft which drives a propshaft thus turning the propellor.
An enibodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; Fig. I.
Shows the rotating-sail/propellor craft in perspective.
Fig. 2.
Shows in aerial view effect of wind 4. on rotating sail, with direction of rotation shown by arrow 5.
Fig. 3.
Shows the craft in 8ide view.
Referring to the drawing Fig. 2. the effect of wind turning the rotating sail in the direction of the arrow 6. is shorn, In Fig. 3. the hull 7. has the 'S' shaped rot awing sail 6. erected on top with allowance for circular movement, The wind strikes the rotating sail thus rotating it in a-predetermined direction. This movement transmitts power through the sail shaft 8. turning a mechanical linkage 9.
between it and the prop/driveehaft iO. thue enabling the propellor ii. to power the craft forward.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS.
A rotating sail/propellor driven boat comprising of a boat hull with an 'S' shaped (aerial view) rigid rotating sail erected on top which, when acted upon by wind from any direction will rotate in only one predetermined direction.
This movement transmitts power to a mechanical linkage at the bottom of the sail shaft which drives a propshaft thus turning the propellor powering the craft along.
