gear with a pinion Z, thus rotating the shaft 'm' and propeller n. It will be obvious that the transmission of the movement from the motor to the propeller is not in any way im= peded by the rotary motion of the box I).
Upon the tube 0 is fixed a bracket 19, secured by screws to the keel or stern post of the boat for the purpose of holding the arrangement in position, while in combination therewith the motor 0 is fixed upon the rear seat at the stern of the boat.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: Upon the rotation of the shafting f .thepropeller is caused to occupy any one of the'iprincipal positions 1 2 3 4 (shown in Fig; 2) orany intermediate position, as may be desired, The position 1 causes the boat to travel ahead, position 2 causes the boat to turn to the right, position 3 causes the boat ;.totravel astern, and position 4 causes it to turn to the left.
If it is desired to stop the vessel while allowing the propeller to rotate, it suffices to revolve the box bin a continuous manner either in one direction or the other;

What I claim is- 1. In a propeller for vessels, the combination with two boxes fixed to the stern of the vessel, the lower end being provided with a gear-wheel, and a tube connecting said boxes,
of suitable shafting journaled in said boxes and tube, a screw-propeller operated by the shafting, a' pinion meshing with said-gearwheel, and a suitably-operated flexible shaft for turning said pin-ion, whereby the box carrying' the propeller-shaft is tially as set forth.
