Abstract

165,132. Vessey, E. A. Jan. 16,1920. Screw propellers.-Relates to variable-pitch marine propellers in which the blades are adjusted by a turning and sliding movement under controlled centrifugal forces and a sliding ring on the propeller shaft, and consists in actuating the ring without thrust bearings running in water. Further cam elements for actuating the sliding ring and a reduction gear may be arranged in the propeller boss or in the ship, and in actuating the gear by an electric motor in the boss or in the ship or by a steam-engine on the ship. The hub bosses receive sockets 2 on the blades 1, Fig. 1, which have screw elements 3 connected by adjustable tie members 15 with a ring 7 slidable on the boss spigot 6. A balancing-spring 25 is fitted over the sleeve 7 which also has an extension 20 to which the control rod 22 is attached. Inboard, the rod 22 has a cross-arm 29. Fig. 3, which extends through slots 27 in the hollow propeller shaft 26, and is pinned to a sleeve 32 capable of sliding on or rotating with the shaft. For moving the sleeve 32 and rod axially, a non-rotating cam 33 is placed adjacent to a second cam 36, which rotates in the fixed bracket 35 but does not slide. This cam can be rotated by gears 39, 38 by an electric motor 44 or other prime mover. In a modification, the motor 52, Fig. 5, is attached to the hub, and the epicyclic gears 51 and cam-sleeves are placed on the boss. Electric leads 55 pass from the motor, through the propeller shaft to a number of copper rings thereon and thence by slip rings and leads to an inboard control position. In a further modification, the electric motor on the boss is replaced by a differential gear which is actuated by a prime mover on the deck, or by hand, through a shaft and gearing attached to the rudder post. The sliding collar may also be directly acted by hydraulic rams, or by a hydraulic motor in the hub. Where no change of pitch is required, the screw members on the blades are replaced by straight keys so that only the diameter of the propeller is altered. Specifications 130,349 and 132,316 are referred to.
