Abstract

1280197 Marine propellers C GOTMALM 11 Dec 1969 [13 Dec 1968] 60594/69 Heading B7V A propeller for an auxiliary yacht has automatically feathering blades 6 and automatic stop means for preventing feathering when going astern. The blades 6 are rotatably mounted on stub shafts 5 secured to an outer hub portion 4 which is mounted for limited angular movement on an inner hub portion 1 keyed to the propeller shaft. Pin 7 in shot 8 limits the relative movement of hub portions 1 and 4. A cone portion 3 is secured to inner hub portion 1 and carries stop member 10. On rotation of the propeller shaft for forward propulsion, blades 6 rotate about stub shafts 5 until they engage fixed or adjustable stops 9 on outer hub portion 4. On reverse rotation of the propeller shaft for going astern, inner hub portion 1 rotates relative to outer portion 4 moving stops 10 to hold the blades against stops 9. Under sail the water moving past the blades moves them to their feathered position. Stub shafts 5 may be coated with P.T.F.E., and a spring may be used, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), to increase the resistance to movement between the inner and outer hub portions, so that the resistance to movement between the blades and their stub shafts is less than that between the hub portions. The pin and slot coupling 7 and 8 may be replaced by a pin in cone portion 3 engaging a slot in hub portion 4, and stops 10 may be replaced by grooves in the periphery of cone portion 3, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
