Abstract
1,038,471. Propeller - lifted watercraft. VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHEWERKE G.m.b.H. April 17, 1964 [April 17, 1963], No. 16074/64. Headings B7A and B7V. A water craft is provided with one or more propellers for producing dynamic lift and propulsion, said propeller or propellers being wholly or partly submerged in water and having its or their axis or axes of rotation inclined at an angle within the range +20 to - 20 degrees to the direction of flow. The propellers may be pivotally mounted relative to their supporting struts 2 (Fig. 1, not shown), or the struts may be pivoted to the hull 1. Only one of the propellers may be driven. The profiles of the blades of the propellers (Fig. 3a, not shown) are generally wedge shaped with sharp leading edges. Hydrofoils 5 are mounted above the propeller on the struts 2 or may be mounted on the streamlined covering of the propeller hubs into which they may be retracted. Means may be included for supplying air to the cavitation space of the propellers. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates the invention as applied to a submarine.
