Abstract
718,857. Propelling ships. HOKE, H. H. Dec. 2, 1952 [Jan. 14, 1952], No. 30560/52. Classes 113(2) and 114 A propeller unit has an external stator 50 surrounding a rotor containing a helical blade 62. The rotor is rotated by multi-phase current supplied to the stator acting on a squirrel cage winding in the rotor. The units can be attached in series both end to end and side by side on the external surface of ships, boats or submarines and can be supplied by current through a controller to operate for steering, or to be isolated when particular units are above the waterline. In a planing type craft the axis of the propellers can be inclined to give lift as well as propelling thrust.
