Abstract

1387142 Propelling boats R LEVI 19 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972] 3177/72 Heading B7V A fast motor boat has a propeller shaft which extends through a hull step and which mounts a propeller at a distance aft of the transom or step equal to between 7 and 30% of the overall length of the hull. The shaft extends directly aft of the driving engine or its gearbox so that the direction reversal of a V-drive is avoided. The propeller is located to operate in a semisubmerged condition. The arrangement increases longitudinal stability and reduces appendage drag. If two shafts and propellers are provided, lateral stability is improved since, above a low degree of heeling, one propeller is brought clear of the water to allow the other to apply an unrestricted righting moment. Where a number of shafts and engines are used, the engines may be staggered along the boat and the shafts may converge towards their rear ends. The rear ends of the shafts may be supported by structures which extend from the rear of the hull and which may carry an exhaust emission cover, anti-spray fins, and rudders.
