Abstract
1325395 Propelling ships R C TOWNSHEND 16 Nov 1971 53051/71 Heading B7V A ring shaped shroud is fixed to the tips of the blades of a marine propeller and has a flat rear face S which lies between sharp edges X and Y and which is perpendicular to the propeller axis. The form of the shroud results in the creation of a triangular section cavity which acts as a vacuum ring to attract cavitation bubbles and the like. The water flow pattern through the propeller is thus stabilized so that the propeller is suitable for use on high speed craft. The inclination A of the shroud to the propeller axis lies between 5 and 15 degrees, the width of the surface S is not less than 20% of the thickness of the shroud cross-section, and the ratio of the length of the shroud to its overall diameter lies between 0À04 and 0À5. The propeller hub may be solid or may be hollow to provide for the emission of engine exhaust gases. The hub diameter is not more than half the overall diameter of the propeller.
