Abstract
1,069,256. Hydrofoil sailing boat; trimming ships; lee-boards. R. D. R. ANDREWS. Dec. 18, 1963 [Dec. 18, 1962], No. 47833/62. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. A sailing craft has at least one hull to which is attached on each side of the central fore-andaft vertical plane through the craft, hydrofoil sections which are inclined outwardly and upwardly away from said central plane. As shown, the craft has two sliding lee-boards 11 to the lower ends of which are attached a transverse central hydrofoil section 10 and two wing hydrofoil sections 12 and 13 which are held outwardly and upwardly inclined by struts 16. The wing hydrofoils can be folded upwards to lie flush with the lee-boards. Chain lines 21 illustrate a modification in which two adjacent hydrofoil sections are joined at the central plane to form a dihedral angle. The hydrofoils are arranged to present an angle of incidence to the water (Fig. 1, not shown). Figs. 4, 5 and 7 (not shown) illustrate the hydrofoils attached to multi-hulled craft. An hydrofoil at the stern ensures stability and may be used for trimming.
