Abstract
520,984. Propelling aircraft and ships. KORT, L. Nov. 7, 1938, No. 32261. [Classes 4 and 114] In an air or marine craft with a pusher screw propeller in which, owing to the interference of the parts in front of the propeller, the velocity at which fluid reaches different parts of the propeller disc is different, guiding means are provided on the craft in front of and near to the propeller circle in the zones where the speed of the fluid flow is below the average, the guiding means being so shaped that the flow of the fluid is deflected towards the direction of movement of the propeller blades as they pass behind the guiding means. Guiding means may also be provided to deflect the flow against the direction of movement of the blades in the zones where the speed of flow is above the average. In a ship such means may include a guide valve 5 above the propeller shaft, and a stern-post shaped in plan as shown in Fig. 3 and raked backwards along the line 2-3 of Fig. 2. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to a propeller surrounded by a nozzle-ring, as shown.
