591,492. Screw propellers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 1942, No. 16451. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1939. [Classes 4 and 114] In vehicle or aircraft power plant having coaxial propellers rotatable in opposite directions and driven by separate motors, the propellers are provided with pitch-changing means and with brakes for holding either propeller against rotation, so that, if one propeller becomes inoperative, it may serve as an airguide for increasing the efficiency of the other. The propellers 16, 18 are mounted on concentric shafts, which are provided with hand-controlled brakes 42, 44, and are driven through gearing by independent engines 12, 14. Pitch-controlling means, which may be hydraulically operated, is provided for each propeller. If either propeller is stopped either by accident or intentionally in order to save fuel &c., it is brought to the limiting high-pitch position, in order to minimize its drag, and is locked by means of its brake. The high-pitch limiting-stops may be so placed that the blades are turned slightly beyond the feathered position, so as to rotate the air stream entering or leaving the active propeller in the reverse direction.
