Abstract

995,830. Blade wheel propellers. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. May 22, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 21201/64. Heading B7G. A blade wheel propeller comprises an elastic membrane 9 extending generally perpendicular to the propeller axis and connecting the propeller shaft 8 to a coaxial driving member 4. In the Figure, the propeller is mounted on a ship's hull with its axis vertical, and is driven through gearing 1, 2, 3 and 4, the latter gear having a truncated conical web 15 so that its periphery, to which membrane 9 is attached, overhangs the propeller shaft 8. The use of the membrane 9 enables the propeller shaft 8 to be supported by a single radial bearing 10 and thrust bearing 11, and the gear 4 by a single radial bearing 14. The pitch of the blades is controlled by a lever 16 mounted within shaft 8 by a universal joint 17 located in the plane of membrane 9.
