Abstract
475,240. Screw propellers. SOC. ANON. FABBRICA ITALIANA ELICHE PER AVIAZIONE. March 3, 1937, No. 6323. Convention date, March 4, 1936. [Class 114] Variable-pitch actuating mechanism of the kind in which a normally stationary screw member is adapted to be actuated by a worm gearing and in turn move a sleeve which is coupled by rods to eccentric pins on the base of the propeller blades, is so disposed that the sleeve is forward of the plane containing the blade axis and the rest of the mechanism is behind. A screw sleeve 26 is provided with an exterior worm which gears with a worm wheel 27 which is connected up to the cockpit of an aeroplane. This sleeve has an exterior flange mounted in bearings 31 on the hub 5 of the propeller so that it is only capable of a rotary motion. Its inner threaded surface is engaged by a nut member 22 which has an inner sliding face whereby when acted upon by the outer screw it can only move longitudinally. It carries thrust ball races 21 engaging a flange 18 on a sleeve 18<1> which passes to the forward end of the boss and slides upon a cylindrical surface provided there. This sleeve has a collar 18<11> and end piece 19 between which is a sleeve 12 which has pins 13 coupled by rods 14 to pins 15 projecting from a block 16 secured to the base of each blade root.
