Abstract

546,291. Screw propellers. FAIRHURST, L. G. Jan. 3, 1941, No. 139. [Classes 4 and 114] In a co-axial airscrew installation, the shaft of the forward airscrew is supported by an antifriction bearing which is carried on extension sleeve secured to the hub of the rear airscrew, the construction providing a strong, compact support for the shaft. In the construction shown in the Figure, a roller-bearing 39 is arranged between the shaft 33 of the forward airscrew and an extension-sleeve 37 secured to the sleeve 35 for mounting the hub 34 of the rear airscrew on the shaft 32. The extensionsleeve is secured by a threaded connection 36 and bolts 138. The outer race of 38 the roller-bearing is formed on the extension-sleeve, and the inner race is formed on a member 41 which is connected by a member 42 to the hub of the forward airscrew. A thrust-bearing 45 for transmitting pitch-changing movements slides on the extension 37. The hub of the forward airscrew is mounted on a split conical-ring 43, or in a modification, engages directly a conical part of the member 40.
