696,303. Securing races on shafts. SHAFER, J. E. Feb. 5, 1951, No. 2790/51. Class 80 (ii). The inner race 22 of a ball-bearing is a soft chrome-steel sleeve, hardened throughout its thickness in the ball-track zone only, and secured to its shaft 12 by one or more hard steel socket - headed set-screws 33 arranged at 90 or 120 degrees and passing through screw-threads in a soft integrally - extended part of the racesleeve 22, which threads are deformed to produce a retaining action when the screws are tightened on the shaft 12, in which latter they bite by means of a toothed rim 35. The outer race can tilt in a spherical outer housing 10 to an extent limited by a pin 27 drilled for passage of lubricant from a fitting 26, as described in Specification 637,488, [Group XXXIV].
