990,552. Bearings. SKEFKO BALL BEARING CO. Ltd. March 19, 1962, No. 10364/62. Heading F2A. In a taper roller bearing the rollers are preloaded by a guide-ring which engages the ends thereof. In an embodiment, the bearing has an outer race 10 held axially in a recess 16 of a structure 15, an inner race 11 attached by an interference fit to a shaft 14, and rollers 12 abutted by the guide-ring 13 having a flange 13a which provides a clearance " X " between the ring 13 and the inner race 11. Adjustment of preloading is effected by a locking-ring 18 which is screwed on to the shaft 14 and urges an abutment ring 17 against the guide-ring 13; further locking is effected by a washer 19 and a ring 20 on the shaft 14. In modifications, a rubber &c. ring is located in the clearance " X " to prevent hammering of the guide and abutment rings when changing axial loads occur; the guide-ring is mounted on a spacer-ring and both rings are prevented from rotating by being slidably keyed to the shaft, the abutment ring is splined to the shaft and the inner race is located axially by a sleeve fixed on the shaft; Belleville washers replace the rubber ring; the abutment ring may be tapered for engagement with a taper face on the guiding ring and may be split to provide resiliency; a spacer may be located between the inner race and the abutment ring; the inner race may be engaged by the abutment ring, which having spaced-holes therein, receives spring-urged tappets therethrough which urge the guide-ring against the rollers; and the inner race may be formed on the shaft.
