Abstract

662,165. Taper roller bearings. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. Feb. 21, 1949 [May 20, 1948], No. 4660/49. Class 12 (i). To permit axial and radial expansion on temperature rise a taper roller bearing between relatively rotatable inner and outer members is mounted in a sleeve having a portion directly supported by one of the members and a bearing mounting portion radially free of said member. The sleeve shown has a portion 13 pressed into a housing 1, and a portion 16, radially clear thereof, has pressed therein the outer race 7 of a single row taper roller bearing the inner race 6 of which is secured to the shaft 3. An intermediate portion of the sleeve has two axially spaced series of circumferentially spaced slots 18a in staggered relationship to permit expansion, which is limited by a safety ring 19 located by a snap ring 20. In a modification for a double row conical roller bearing having two inner and a common outer race, the two end sleeve portions engage the housing, the centre portion radially clear thereof carries the outer race, and the intermediate portions therebetween each have two series of staggered holes embraced by a safety ring. The radial clearance between the housing bore and the resilient sleeve portion may alternatively be effected by recessing the bore.
