Abstract

620,566. Mounting bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., WOODFIELD, T. H., and MORTON, C. J. Jan. 15, 1945, No. 1167. [Class 12 (i)] A ball bearing mounting to obviate creep and to avoid the necessity for extreme accuracy in machining bearing housings comprises between the outer race and the housing a member having a series of spaced resilient members acting radially on the outer periphery of the outer race together with resilient means, integral with or separate from the preceding means, acting axially on the outer race. As shown in Fig. 2, the actual ball bearing being omitted for convenience of illustration, a ball bearing for a shaft 3 is mounted in its housing 4 by the interposition of arched resilient fingers 7 which bear on points around the periphery of the outer race, these fingers being formed by bending up from a washer disc of resilient material 5, Fig. 3, radially extending fingers 6 to form a cup-like member and then curving the fingers in a circumferential direction. Intermediate fingers 8 are doubled back to exert a light axial thrust on the outer race, thereby to eliminate play between the balls and the races; small bosses 9 are stamped in the washer to serve as stops thereby preventing excessive compression of the doubled-back fingers 8. The axial thrust may be given by circularly extending flaps pressed out from the body of the washer, Fig. 5 (not shown), or by an auxiliary undulating washer, Fig. 8 (not shown), tagged to the main washer. The stops 9 may be replaced by a ring of wire tagged to the washer.
