Abstract
811,021. Thrust bearings. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1957 [Jan. 9, 1956], No. 158/57. Class 12 (1). In an axial thrust bearing comprising a housing 10 with bearing bosses 11, 12 supporting a shaft 16 and having first and second bearing shoulders 24, 25, an axially fixed thrust collar 15 provided on a thrust bearing 13 is disposed against the bearing shoulder 24 and a thrust bearing ring 26 disposed against the second bearing shoulder 25 has a face 31 to limit the movement of the collar 15. The bearing member 15 is integral with the shaft bearing 13 and the ring 26 is retained in place by an expansible ring 29. A thrust bearing member 17 which engages the thrust collar 17 has a tab 18 which extends into a slot 19 in the shaft 16 and the collar is forcibly pressed against a shoulder 21 on the shaft by a sleeve 20 with an anti-rotational tab 21a. The surfaces of the shoulders 24, 25 may be machined simultaneously by a common tool and the arrangement shown is applied to a turbo supercharger with a turbine wheel 34 on one end of the shaft and an impeller 22 on the other end, the distances between the two shoulders 24, 25, shroud surfaces 32, 35 and the impeller 22 and turbine wheel 34 are formed with close tolerances. A modified construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), is also described.
