[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Ball bearings, particularly those of very smal size for use in instru ments &c. have the bal races brought to finished size by pressing and rol ling in balls that are somewhat oversize, for example the balls may be 0.124 inch diameter when the running balls are to be 0.109 inch. Ir the production of an outer race 1, Fig. 1, the track or groove is pressed or turned to a larger radius and less depth than required and is finished by balls 2 that are slightly oversize that are pressed, and rolled in the track by the conical end 4 of a driven spindle. The rolling is finished when the flange shown engages the balls and such engagement causes skidding of the balls and polishing of the raceway. The race is held in a jig 3. Instead of the conical end 4, the spindle may have a cylindrical and shouldered end 7, as shown in Fig. 4, which illustrates the production of a race for a journal type bearing. An inner conical race 8, Fig. 3, for use with the race 1 is finished by mounting on the end 10 of a spindle and rolling in a ring of balls 2 mounted in a counterbored die 11. The die for the inner race of the journal bearing has a parallel bore the race being finished when the balls fully enter the bore.
