Abstract
670,403. Coupling a sleeve and shaft. SHAFER, J. E. March 7, 1950, No. 5710/50. Addition to 623,456. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] The invention comprises a method of coupling a sleeve to a shaft in a sealed bearing, in which the sleeve is the inner race-ring. The sealed bearing 11 consists of a tiltable outer - race ring 18, balls 21 and an inner race ring 22 in the form of a sleeve, mounted on the shaft 12. The extended outer end portions of the race ring 22 each have two radially extending internally threaded holes spaced 90 degrees apart, the holes being arranged so that one hole of each pair is in substantially axial alignment with a hole at the other end of the ring, the other holes being in diagonally opposed relation. The holes in the left-hand end of the ring receive in threaded relation therein socket head type set screws 28, 29, and the holes at the other end receive similar screws 30 and 31. The set screws 28 and 30 are in axial alignment, and the set screws 29 and 31 in diagonally opposed relation. The set screws 28-31 have knurled or toothed ends as at 32. The race ring is thus held cocked or tilted with respect to the shaft 12.
