Abstract
334,044. Ablett, C. A., Kay, S., and Cooper Roller Bearings Co., Ltd. Aug. 12, 1929. Securing ball-races on shafts.- The inner race of a split ball or roller bearing is made in two, three, or more sections formed with tapering locating-surfaces each engaged by a registering ring assembled by r a d i a l movement, the tapering surfaces being of such steepness (e.g. 45‹ or over) as to ensure registration parallel as well as transversely to the axis. As shown, the inner race is in halves and the locating surfaces thereon comprise V-shaped grooves 22, which may have concave or convex sides, engaged by registering rings 24 in two parts united by recessed screws 28 and extending beyond the race ends. The inner race may be bored cylindrical to fit the shaft directly, or, as shown, a taper adapter 32 is used, the race being forced upon the taper by split nuts 38, the halves of which are bolted together and threaded to extensions 34 of the adapter, which extensions pass through recesses in the inner diameter of the registering rings. In one form, a single nut 38 at the smaller end only is used, and in a simpler form both nuts are dispensed with, the race being hammered into position. When an adapter is used the arrangement is such that when the race diameter is correct, the meeting surfaces of the race are not quite in contact and those of the registering rings are in contact. When the race is fitted directly to the shaft, the reverse is the case. Spigot-and-socket means may be provided to ensure that the rings are assembled so as to break joint with the race. The meeting surfaces of the race may be inclined to the axis and may be slightly bevelled. According to the Provisional Specification, the halves of the inner race may be located by a shroudlike sleeve between it and the shaft and the tangential screws 28 may be arranged as is described in Specification 312,830.
