Abstract

199,755. Ellis, A. T., and Preen, A. Feb. 1, 1922. Roller bearings.-A combined journal and end thrust bearing, which forms a. single unit when assembled, has rollers 3, with outwardly converging truncated conical ends, engaging concentric bearing rings 1, 2, each having conical bearing surfaces 9, 10 separated by an annular recess. The length of each roller is equal to or less than its diameter. The conical ends of the rollers may abut direct or may be connected by a cylindrical or arcuate portion. Each roller may be made in two parts separated by a spring, as shown in Fig. 8. The bearing surfaces either on the rollers or on the bearing rings may be of arcuate form. The angle of the conical surfaces may vary from 35‹ to 55‹ with the axis of the shaft, and each bearing surface of the rollers or rings may be subdivided by annular grooves. The bearing rings may be divided laterally and obliquely as shown at 41 to enable the parts to be assembled on a shaft. The rollers are spaced by a cage in two or more parts having curved and tapered recesses to receive the rollers, and the cage may consist of a number of radial segments each formed in two parts. The bearing may have several rows of rollers arranged either concentrically with intermediate rings or side by side, as shown in Fig. 5. In the latter case the rollers which lie side by side may be rigidly connected together, and one of the bearing rings may be subdivided. The edges between the conical and central portions of the rollers may be rounded.
