Abstract
417,768. Roller bearings. SKERRETT, H. N., 24, Temple Row, Birmingham.- (Timken Roller Bearing Co. ; Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) April 7, 1934, No. 10548. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (ii).] A taper roller bearing has one of its bearing members 1, 4 provided with ribs 8, 9 at its opposite ends which closely confine the rollers 3 and are circumferentially opposed to the other bearing member with such a slight clearance that the parts act as plain bearings in the event of deformation of the rollers. In Fig. 1, the ribs 8, 9 are on the bearing cup and have cylindrical peripheries so close to the cylindrical parts 6, 7 of the bearing cone 1 that under heavy loads or shocks, these parts act as plain bearings. Lubricant supplied through the journal member to radial passages 10 opening at the small ends of the rollers passes to their large ends by the pumping action of the rollers themselves. The ribs 8, 9 may have conical peripheries, in which case the cone 1 has a single conical surface. In modifications, the ribs 8, 9 are on the bearing cone, or both bearing members have ribs, the adjacent cylindrical peripheries of which are located approximately at the axes of the bearing rollers. The latter form has a separate rib at one end of the cone. Fig. 6 shows a double-row bearing, the inner bearing-member having end ribs 8<d> adjacent the small ends of the rollers and a low central thrust-rib 30. A modified doublerow bearing has the end ribs and the central thrust rib which engages the large ends of the rollers formed on the bearing cups. In some forms, the bearing may be made self-contained by making the diameter of the cylindrical peripheral portion of one of the ribs different from that of the circle formed by the ends of the rollers over which the said portion must be pressed in assembly.
