Abstract

206,606. Martes, H. Aug. 16, 1922. Ball bearings.-A selfcontained adjustable twopoint contact ball bearing having two or more rows of balls comprises a cup a having a cylindrical outer surface a<2> and a cone b having a cylindrical inner surface b<2>, each row of balls c, c<1> running on a conical surface on one member and in a groove in the other member. The groove has a curvature slightly greater than that of the balls, so that each ball makes contact at diametrically-opposite points. As shown in Fig. 1, the cup a is formed with a conical inner surface a<1> and the cone b is formed with grooves b<3>, b<4>. but this arrangement may be reversed. Fig. 6 shows a construction in which the balls c of one row run in a groove b<3> on the cone b and on a conical surface in the cup a, while the balls c<1> of the other row run on a conical surface on the cone b and in a groove a' in the cup a. The balls in the two rows may be of different diameters. The balls are spaced and retained in position on the cone b by cages d, d<1>, Figs. 1 and 3, which comprise cylindrical or conical rings of a diameter greater than that of the ball centres and having apertures f smaller than the balls and cut through at one side of the ring so as to be sprung over the balls. The parts may be retained in position by a spring-ring d<2>, Fig. 5, or by a spring-ring d<3>, Fig. 10. Specifications 10986/96 and 2557/02 are referred to.
