Abstract
364,860. Roller bearings. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Tyson Roller Bearing Corporation; 75, Wes Street. New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 19, 1931, No. 1793. [Class 12 (i).] In a taper roller bearing an end face of each roller bears against an abutment surface on a thrust flange on the larger end of the cone at points located outside the conical locus of the axis of rotation of the rollers and on opposite sides of a plane through the axes of the bearing and roller. As shown the thrust flange 13 of the cone 10 has an annular groove 16 and the large end face of each roller is plane with the corners 20 rounded so that the end face of the roller engages the flange 13 at points o, 0<1>, i, i<1>, Fig. 6. The groove 16 may be shaped as shown dottedat 22 in Fig. 2 so that contact occurs only at the points o, 0<1>. Each roller has a pintle 15 at the large end accommodated in the groove 16 and a similar pintle may be arranged at the small end of the roller. The pintles 15 prevent the rollers from falling out when the cone 10 and cup 11 are separated. The pintle .15 may be cylindrical and the groove 16 shaped to correspond. To prevent deformation of the race track 46, Fig. 10, when the cup 24 is forced into an undersized housing the ring has peripheral grooves 40, 41, which are deeper and/or wider towards the thicker end of the ring. The line b-b drawn through the inner sides of the grooves is substantially parallel to the race track 46. The grooves permit surface hardening of the cup to extend deeper into the material thereof A spacing cage for the rollers is not used and the rollers contact one another and are held assembled upon the cone 10 by a retaining ring 14, Fig. 2, locked to the cone by a wire. Preferably the locking means consists of a number of members 33, Fig. 10, having shanks 34 and eccentric heads 35. The retaining ring 32, has openings 37, 36 in which the locking members 33 are assembled prior to mounting the ring 32 upon the cone 23. After assembly the members 33 are rotated' so that the heads 35 engage an annular groove 38 in the cone 23 and the members 33 are then fixed in this position by upsetting the end 'of each shank 34 such as by making a centre punch impression 39.
