324,587. Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Smith, C. H. April 22, 1929. Grant of Patent refused. Securing sleeves, collars, ball-races, and the like on shafts.-Sleeves or collars, such as ball races for bearings, are secured on shafts by split conical sleeves C, C<1> which are forced into the conical bores of the collars or inner races A, A<1> by the unscrewing of a nut E engaging a threaded cylindrical portion D of the sleeve C and bearing against the sleeve C<1>. Lateral movement of the races is prevented by abutments which may comprise a split spring ring or a divided collar G engaging a circumferential groove, and a collar F engaging a shoulder on the shaft. Additional races such as I may also be secured. The nut E may be used for withdrawing the sleeve C and may then be reversed for withdrawal of the sleeve C<1>. In a modification, the sleeves are threaded with opposite hands and the nut engages both sleeves so that rotation in one direction tightens the sleeves and opposite rotation withdraws them. In a simpler form for securing a single race, the nut may bear against a fixed abutment e.g. a shoulder on the shaft.
