870,841. Bearings. SCHAEFFLER, W., and SCHAEFFLER, G., [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER OHG]. Dec. 1, 1958 [Dec. 23, 1957], No. 38658/58. Class 12 (1). A roller bearing comprises an outer race 9 having a track on the inner circumferential surface for rollers 23, and a convex outer surface mounted in a sleeve 11 which has a conical bore. Axial displacement of the outer race 9 relative to the sleeve 11 causes a wedging action resulting in the race contracting on to the rollers and the sleeve to expand and grip the housing 20. The dimensions of the outer race are so arranged during manufacture that the resulting stress due to contraction is equal to or greater than the maximum stress produced by radial loads on the bearing. Axial movement of the outer race is effected by means of a ring 27 fixed to the housing and retaining the sleeve 11, and a further ring 28 threaded into the ring 27 such that rotation of the ring 28 compresses the spring washers 29 and displaces the outer race. Alternatively, a sleeve 6, Fig. 2, having a conical outer surface may be mounted on a shaft 8, the inner race having a convex inner surface. The wedging action of the inner race and the conical sleeve contracts the sleeve on to the shaft and expands the race against the rollers. In a modification, the convex surface of the race is relieved as shown in Fig. 5 and the spaces so formed are filled with a resilient or deformable material 14, the exterior surface presenting a conical shape similar to that of the sleeve.
