629,766. Making bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., and McNICOLL, D. Nov. 20, 1947, No. 30761. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A cage 5 for a roller-bearing assembly comprises a tapered open-ended sleeve having apertures 4 for rollers, one end being circular merging into a polygonal shape at the other end of the cage. Before assembly the cage is circular at each end, the diameter of the smaller end being sufficiently small to pass over the conical rollers 2 when they are in position on the outer bearing race 1. A tool 6 having a cup-shaped end 6a with an annular wall winch is castellated to provide a plurality of recesses is adapted to support the rollers against an annular shoulder 3 in the race 1. The small end of the cage is then expanded into a polygonal shape by a fluted punch 10 having ribs or lands 12 engaging the ribs 9 of the cage and a spigot 14 engaging a central passage 15 in the tool 6. Alternatively the smaller end may be circular and of the correct diameter, and the larger end may be expanded into a polygonal shape.
