Abstract
766,170. Tapered-roller bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Aug. 4, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 25356/54. Class 12 (1). A tapered-roller bearing comprises an outer race 1 having a conical interior raceway 2 and a thrust flange 5, an inner race 6 having a cylindrical raceway 8 and interposed rollers 9 having portions 9a of conical form which make line contact with the outer raceway 2 and whose apices intersect at a common point 3 on the bearing axis. The rollers 9 have curved end portions 9b which merge with the conical portions 9a and facilitate point contact 11 of the rollers with the inner raceway 8. This allows free axial movement of the inner race 6 relative to the rollers 9. Stop flanges 12, 13 are provided at the ends of the inner race 6. Fig. 3 shows two rows of rollers mounted with their larger ends outwards, and Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the rollers 9 are mounted with their larger ends inwards.
