A method of arranging balls, rollers or needles in or on cages, races or temporary holders in the assembly of a bearing comprises drawing by air suction the balls &c. against holes in the required positions and maintaining the suction while the balls &c. are engaged by the races &c. In Fig. 2, a cage 8 is located over the suction nozzle 30 and the windows 9 aligned with the suction holes 12, Fig. 3, in the - nozzle. The rollers 10 are thus drawn into the windows and retained by the outer race 11. If the windows are wider than the rollers, the bearing is removed from the nozzle on to an inner race or a pasteboard sleeve to prevent inward escape of the rollers. Instead of providing holes in the suction nozzle, suction may be applied direct to the ball-cage 14, Fig. 4, which is mounted on the end of the nozzle. In Fig. 5, air is drawn from the open end of the nozzle, outwardly through the windows 24 of the roller cage 22 and between the axial fingers 28 of a ring 23 to enter the pipe through openings 29 at the circumference of a plug 20. Thus the rollers 25 are drawn outwardly into the cage in which they are held by the inner race 27. If the cage does not prevent outward escape of the rollers, it is withdrawn direct into the outer race 30. The rollers of a flat or conical thrust-bearing may be assembled and the needles of a universal joint (Figs. 7 and 9, not shown). In the latter case, an end-ring with an inner lip supporting the needles is positioned on the nozzle before the needles are attracted.
