801,851. Roller bearings. SCHAEFFLER, W., and SCHAEFFLER, G., [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER OHG.]. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 15, 1954], No. 32672/55. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] An axial retaining ring 5 for the needles 2 and cage 4 of a roller bearing consists of a deformable closed ring and is located in a groove 6 formed in the outer race 1, the ring having only a small fraction of its periphery bearing against the bottom of the groove. Before deformation the ring may have parallel sides, which are obliquely inclined to the axis, and a recess 9 in its periphery. The ring is then deformed so that its sides are perpendicular to the axis, a mandrel being located in the bore to prevent reduction in the diameter of the ring. In a modification, peripheral teeth 18, Fig. 3, are provided on a ring 16. Alternatively, the ring is located in a groove in the inner race.
