Abstract

546,510. Screw propellers. HOOVER, W. S. March 27, 1941, No. 4161. Convention date, April 16, 1940. [Class 114] A variable-pitch propeller blade is mounted in a hubsocket by means of balls which engage grooves formed in the propeller-shank or a sleeve thereon, and registering grooves formed in rings or a sleeve inserted between the propeller-shank and the hub-socket. The blade 22, Fig. 1, is threaded on to a shank 26 on a pitchchanging gear 24 and is locked-thereto by screws 28. Rows of balls are arranged in grooves formed a sleeve 30 on the blade, and in rings 36 which are inserted in the socket 20 and retained by a nut 48. The grooves in the rings are open on one face, the bottom ring being preferably inverted to permit preloading of the bearing. The inner grooves may be formed directly in the blade, the sleeve 30 being omitted. An abutment 40 is arranged between the gear 24 and the end 44 of the socket. In alternative constructions, the blade is threaded into the shank 26, the inner and outer ballgrooves being formed in the shank and in rings respectively; or, as shown in Fig. 4, the inner grooves are formed in the shank 26, and the outer grooves are formed in a sleeve 58roidep v d with apertures 60 for inserting the balls 38. The grooves are deeper than the apertures so that when the nut 48 is tightened, the balls are moved out of register with the apertures. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the outer grooves are formed in a sleeve 62, and the inner grooves are formed directly in the blade 22<SP>1</SP>, and communicate with apertures 66 for inserting the balls, The blade is formed with an integral pitch-changing gear 24.
