Abstract

546,621. Screw propellers. FAIRHURST, L. G. Dec. 19, 1940, No. 17893. [Class 114] In a blade-mounting for a variable-pitch airscrew, the blade-root 10 is formed with conical and cylindrical portions 12, 11 engaging corresponding portions of a two-part sleeve 13 which is clamped to the portion 11, the arrangement enabling the sleeve to carry the centrifugal and bending loads on the blade. The portion 12 may be formed by an upsetting operation. Preferably, the sleeve is formed with a longitudinal slit 14 having serrations 21, and is bound at the top by a divided ring 18 provided with a tightening-bolt 19, and at the bottom by a flanged ring 16. The surfaces 12, 15 are held in tight engagement by a ring 22 which is screwed into the ring 16. The ring 16 may be provided with a pin 25 in connection with a pitch-changing motor. The pitch can be initially adjusted, without disturbing the motor-connections, by slackening the ring 18 and turning the blade.
