Abstract

489,400. Screw propellers. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, F. M. April 6, 1937, No. 9792. [Class 114] The root of a screw-propeller blade has an external metal sleeve screwed thereon and an inner metal core screwed into a recess, the two threads being different either in pitch or hand or both and the two parts are locked by a common plate. A sleeve 3 with buttress threads 4 is screwed on to the root 2 of a blade 1. A metal core 6 with buttress threads 7 is screwed into a recess 8. Both threaded surfaces taper so that the material of the root is compressed. A plate 15 is secured to the root by screws 13 and dowels 14. Locking is effected by a plate 18 secured by four screws 19 into four of a series of twenty holes 19A to the plate 15 and having a double hexagon opening adapted to engage the hexagon on the head 17 of the core 6. To the plate 15 is also secured a plate 20 having a serrated edge which is provided for engagement with means forming part of the pitch-varying mechanism. The sleeve 3 has a flange 9 for co-operation with the thrust bearing which takes the load due to centrifugal force on the blade.
