Abstract
553,936. Locking nuts. WOOD, G. May 8, 1942, No. 6230. [Class 89 (i)] A nut 1 and locking member 5 are tapped to suit the bolt at 4 and 11 and the upper part of the nut 1 is turned down and threaded to suit an internal thread 6 in a counterbored part of the nut 5. The threads 4 and 6 differ in pitch. Clearance grooves are provided at 7 and 8 and, after assembly, the end of the thread 6 in the groove 8 is deformed to prevent separation of the nuts. The deformed part may merge into the normal thread, or a radial cut may be made so that the deformed section starts with an abrupt displacement. Part of the thread on the other nut may be cut away to leave a square end that abuts positively against the displaced section. The under face of the nut 5 may be concave at 25, Fig. 5, to facilitate the deformation by a tool introduced between the nuts.
