Abstract
530,280. Self-tapping screws. STEELE. V. W., and STEELE, W. H. June 20, 1939, No. 18006. [Class 83 (iii)] A self-tapping screw has the shank composed of a leading part 4 of diameter slightly less than that of the hole into which it is to be inserted and a following portion 5 of smaller diameter than the portion 4. The two portions may merge into each other at 6, 7 or may be separated by a step. The thread 8, which may be single or multiple, increases uniformly or otherwise from the start 10 to a point 9, after which it remains parallel. The screw may have a plain portion between the threaded part and the head, this plain portion being adapted to engage an enlarged hole in the work and having a diameter equal to or greater than the tops of the thread 8. The forward end of the screw may extend beyond the end 10 of the thread and may be tapered as at 11 or pointed. The screws may be screwed directly into the work or may co-operate with unthreaded nuts and may be partly or wholly hardened. According to the Provisional Specification the portions 4, 5 may be united by an inclined shoulder which will have the effect of removing the thread formed in the work when the screw is reversely rotated, thereby allowing removal of the screw.
